Volunteering at The Stop is a rewarding way to give back to your community, and increasing access to healthy food for those in need. As a volunteer-driven organization, we rely on 150-200 volunteers each year to help run dozens of programs focused on food, community building, urban agriculture, and health. Our volunteer program is led by me and Leya, the Program Assistant. We’re dedicated to recruiting and onboarding new volunteers to support The Stop’s vibrant programming. If you’re looking to volunteer in Toronto, we offer many meaningful ways to get involved and make a difference.

Why Volunteer At The Stop?

The reasons are as varied as the people who step up to help! Some are driven by a desire to give back, others are looking to connect with their community. Many want to share their skills to benefit their neighbours, while some need community service hours for school. Others simply have free time and want to make a difference. No matter the reason, each volunteer brings their unique motivation and energy, contributing to the vibrant tapestry of generosity and support that makes The Stop so special.

How to Become a Volunteer

Becoming a volunteer at The Stop is a simple but meaningful journey. Here’s how to get started:

Step 1: Submit Your Application

We welcome everyone to apply online. In 2024 alone, we received over 800 volunteer applications—a testament to the incredible community spirit and generosity of people wanting to support The Stop! To make the process accessible to all, applicants without a computer or who need additional support can visit The Stop in person to fill out our application.

Due to the high volume of interest, we can’t respond to every applicant individually. But if you don’t hear back from us, please re-apply!

Step 2: Attend a Volunteer Information Session

Selected applicants are invited to attend an in-person volunteer information session at our main location: 1884 Davenport Road, Toronto. We host six sessions each year, held every other month.

During the session, you’ll learn about, The Stop’s programs and impact, the realities of food insecurity in our community, our commitment to anti-racist, anti-oppressive community support, the vital role food plays in building community, and much more!

After attending the session, you’ll receive a second form to share your availability and any program preferences. Our volunteer needs are dynamic, and roles vary depending on program requirements. But there are roles for everyone!

Step 3: Connect with us

The final step involves a conversation with us to discuss your volunteer goals, interests, availability, and schedule.

We’ll also go over our request for a three-month minimum commitment to make sure your schedule aligns with our program needs. If everything is a good fit, you’ll be scheduled for your first shift within 1-2 weeks. And with that, welcome to The Stop’s Volunteer Team!

FAQs

What skills do I need to volunteer?

Enthusiasm and a commitment to supporting our community are the most important qualities we look for in a volunteer. Whether you have skills in cooking, food preparation, organizing, or serving, we have roles that suit all types of people. Just bring your passion and whatever talents you have.

How often can I volunteer?

Volunteer shifts take place once per week, for 3-4 hours. If you’re unable to volunteer weekly, consider becoming a float volunteer, that way you can join us twice per month based on your availability. We ask all volunteers for a minimum commitment of three months, with the hope that you’ll stay involved even longer!

Do I receive training?

Yes! On your first day at The Stop, you’ll participate in an onboarding session and receive an orientation to our facilities. You’ll also receive program-specific training from your supervisor and The Stop staff to ensure you feel prepared and confident in your role.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

We welcome adult volunteers aged 18 and over. Students aged 16-17 can also volunteer with parental or guardian permission.

The Stop has been providing emergency food access and feeding the Davenport west-end Toronto community for over 40 years. We are a great option for those who want to volunteer in Toronto, give back, and support our mission to increase access to healthy food in a way that maintains dignity, builds health and community, and challenges inequality. I’ll leave you with a favourite volunteer quote:

“Volunteering has left me profoundly enriched and incredibly humbled. I have grown food in public parks. I have helped create delicious recipes. I have taken home so many gifts of friendship, confidence, self-assuredness, and deep, deep appreciation.”
