About us

About us

From our origins as one of Canada’s first food banks in the 1980’s, The Stop has blossomed into a thriving community hub where neighbours participate in a broad range of programs that provide healthy food, foster social connections, build food skills, and promote civic engagement.

We believe that nutritious, sustainable, and culturally appropriate food is a human right for all.

Our mission

The Stop strives to increase access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, builds health and community, and challenges inequality.

The Stop seemed like my little piece of heaven. I felt welcomed, cared for, and uplifted. I was inspired to work with my community. I didn’t know exactly how, but I knew that The Stop would be the place to start.

Our services

We have three locations. At 1884 Davenport Road, we provide frontline services to our community, including a drop-in meal program, healthy food bank, perinatal supports, peer advocacy, good food markets, and community kitchens.

Our Green Barn is located inside Artscape Wychwood Barns at 601 Christie Street. It’s a sustainable food production and education centre that houses a state-of-the-art greenhouse, a sheltered garden, community bake oven, and compost demonstration centre—along with our year-round Farmers’ Market.

The Stop’s Wychwood Open Door at 729 St. Clair West is our newest location. It’s a daytime drop-in centre that brings community members together around good food and enriching activities.

Our scope

The Stop is deeply grounded in Toronto’s West End. Namely, the Davenport and St. Clair West communities.

Communities from across the city and around the world took notice of The Stop’s powerful model, and in 2012 Community Food Centres Canada (CFCC) was launched to drive the development of community food centres based on The Stop across the country.

Today, The Stop and CFCC are two distinct, autonomous organizations who support each other’s work to advocate for healthier communities and more equitable social policy.

When I came to The Stop, I had two contacts in my phone: my doctor, and my ex. Now, my contact list is full.

Our Strategy

As we look to the future, The Stop will continue to orient our programs and advocacy around the significance of food in building healthier communities, stronger local economies, more sustainable food systems, and equitable societies.

Our 2018-2021 Goals:

  • Amplify community power to challenge the systems of inequality and poverty.
  • Deliver innovative programs and services to build healthier, connected and more self-deter-mined communities
  • Foster connections and community engagement in thriving and dignified spaces that build a sense of belonging
  • Build our organizational capacity to support our growth and resilience.

Our impact

The Stop uses good food as a catalyst for change.

We’ve seen it act as a powerful tool—something that can transform a person’s health and bolster their sense of identity.

Good food can also strengthen solidarity between members of a local community, and even deepen the connections we feel to each other on a global scale.

Our Values

The Stop Community Food Centre strives to increase access to healthy food in a manner that maintains dignity, builds health and community, and challenges inequality.
